The Te Awa Lakes development will transform Hamilton’s northern gateway into a vibrant community hub and tourism destination. Bordered by the Waikato Expressway and the Te Awa Cycleway, the 62ha development will include around 860 high quality, medium density residential dwellings, retail shops, river links, tourism activities, and a water adventure park. CKL has been working closely with Perry Group in support of the land use change and plan change proposals to convert the former industrial site to residential and recreational use with the design of the lakes and wetlands. This project required a design strategy that would restore the freshwater system and effectively manage stormwater discharge. We designed an integrated lake and outfall river system to minimise impact on the Waikato River. Stormwater run-off from the Expressway and across the development site will be directed through wetlands for bioretention and treatment before discharge.
