This May has seen a new director appointed to CKL’s board, with existing directors delighted to welcome Judith Makinson to their ranks. Her addition to the directorship enhances the company’s governance team, and is an acknowledgement of the sustained level of excellence Judith has achieved for almost five years at CKL.

Joining CKL with more than 20 years’ experience in public and private sector developments, as well as being an Independent Hearings Commissioner, Judith has been instrumental in growing the company’s Transportation division, which works holistically alongside the business’ wider land development service offering.

“Judith’s appointment to the board is recognition of the extensive skills she has displayed throughout her time at CKL, moving through the company in a managerial capacity, to now reaching governance level,” explains Board Chair Geoff Webster.
Geoff notes that providing clear career progression pathways is a key tenet of CKL’s team approach, and Judith’s addition to the company’s board will bolster the team, add robustness of thought and further diversity to the governance arena.

“Our goal is always to recognise talent, maintain great people and cultivate opportunities for them to grow within the company, giving the requisite support required every step of the way. Whether its achieving chartership or a cadastral survey license, or working towards a Masters or PhD, that is how you foster talent, develop careers and set a company up for success,” says Geoff.

“We have certainly found over the years that these company values are in a way self-perpetuating, as we attract people who afford us diversity and appreciate the extensive support.

“It’s clear that Judith will have plenty to offer as we collectively shape CKL’s future, and there’s no doubt we’re excited to work together,” adds Geoff.

For Judith, promotion to CKL’s board is an exciting next step in her career.

“I’ve always been drawn to opportunities to influence and develop a business; that’s why I joined CKL as it was clear to me from the outset that the company values mentorship and professional development.

“I’ve certainly ‘thrown’ myself into growing the transportation side of the company over the past few years. So when the invitation came to contribute to CKL on the board at governance level, I couldn’t say no to the offer.”

Judith is an active member of Women in Property, has served on the Property Council New Zealand Waikato Executive Committee, as well as completing two terms as Engineering NZ Waikato Branch Chair. She is a chartered engineer both in New Zealand and the United Kingdom and actively mentors up-and-coming engineers both within CKL and the wider profession.

Judith’s progression is complemented by other moves within the Transportation team, with the recent addition of experienced Principal Transportation Engineer and Associate, Daryl Hughes, and promotion of Michael Hall to Transportation Engineering Manager.

Michael gained his chartership last year, and offers a wide range of experience from two-lot subdivisions to multi-billion dollar highways, taking CKL’s unique holistic approach to projects to consider more than just the transportation matters.

“As I step up to governance, I have every confidence Michael will continue developing the strong Transportation team we’ve built. Even though I have new responsibilities with the board, I’m thrilled to be able to support him, the Transportation division and the wider CKL team as we look towards an exciting future,” says Judith.
