Substantial greenfield fee increases could stifle growth in Hamilton. If implemented, a proposed new Hamilton Council policy will see commercial and industrial developers face increased levies for using greenfield sites.

HCC wishes to spend more money on reserves. This could cost commercial developers $1,402 per 100m2, and $749 per 100m2 for industrial developers. With other rises in greenfield fees, the total increases in levies would come to 14% for commercial and 16% for industrial.

Councillors have agreed on the new charges, but will hold public consultation prior to final approval.

Many fear that the new charges will slow down investment and building in Hamilton. This, in conjunction with Variation 21 has caused some to comment that growth in Hamilton is being "stifled".
