CKL Waikato was delighted to be named as a finalist in the Strategy & Planning category of Westpac Waikato Business Awards 2016 - held at the beginning of November.

The Strategy & Planning category recognises organisations which have developed a long term strategy, set business targets and devised specific plans that have been implemented across the business that have been fundamental to business success.

Warren Lovegrove, Director of CKL Waikato, says making it to the finals was a great achievement and recognised CKL’s change in strategic direction to better reflect the environment and, ultimately, drive company growth.

“The awards were an excellent opportunity to focus on our business in a structured way and identify core strengths and competitive advantages as well as areas that may benefit from more focus in the future. As part of the process we received valuable independent assessment and feedback from experienced judges, providing valued advice to help us grow, develop and improve.

“It was also a good platform to showcase our services to a wider audience and also provided networking opportunities with other business leaders.”

Warren says the award entry highlighted CKL’s change in strategic direction to broaden its range of services and extend its client base from what it had traditionally provided.

“This ultimately led to the employment of specialist engineers and planners, the merger with Stormwater Solutions – a company offering extensive stormwater management and environmental engineering expertise – and broadened our targeted marketing. In financial terms, the result was a significant increase in revenue across our engineering, planning and our new environmental departments within a single financial year.”

Also highlighted in the award entry was how CKL undertook management and board of director surveys to gain insight into issues facing the business, potential opportunities and views of future direction. A Human Resources’ company also conducted a confidential employee survey to identify day to day issues.

“These surveys provided an excellent base to form our strategy which was presented to all employees for comment. Directors were then appointed to implement each of the strategic objectives and are required to report quarterly on progress.

“We really wanted to highlight in the award entry how our employees play a pivotal role in the future success of our company and we believe it is extremely important they are fully engaged and supportive of our goals. The best way to do this is to retain their focus on the elements they have control over and celebrate the successes achieved through our strategy,” he says.
