CKL kicks off the celebrations!
CKL employees and their partners celebrated our 30th Anniversary year at a dinner event in Auckland in late July. The event brought together past and present Directors and team members, and showcased moments in CKL’s history through a photo tribute.
Client events will be held over the coming months in Auckland, Hamilton and Te Awamutu. Planning is underway so look out for a ‘Save the Date’ coming to your email inbox soon! We look forward to celebrating this milestone with our clients and partners.

|
CKL announces an expanded client offering with a dedicated focus on transportation engineering and master planning. Judith Makinson, Transportation Engineering Manager, has recently joined CKL and brings over 20 years’s experience with commercial, residential, industrial, education, leisure, retail and mixed-use developments.

 Judith Makinson - Transportation Engineering Manager
We are delighted to introduce Judith Makinson to CKL clients and partners. The appointment of Judith to the CKL leadership team further expands our engineering capability with a dedicated focus on transportation engineering and master planning. Based in our Hamilton office, Judith started with us on Monday 27 August and has already hit the ground running – providing advice and counsel on numerous land development projects. We have had the pleasure of partnering with Judith on previous occasions on a number of collaborative projects so she is no stranger to the CKL team.
Judith’s appointment is part of our strategic growth plan as we look to build a team to provide specialist transport engineering skills and expertise across all CKL office locations over time.
With extensive experience in transport master planning, Judith is adept at identifying how people move to and through their environment and setting the scene for land development projects to accommodate pedestrian and vehicular access.
Working with often-complex commercial and residential developments, Judith demonstrates creative problem solving. Engineering solutions to meet the client’s needs are developed through master planning, which she carries forward into the detailed consideration of traffic effects through Integrated Transportation Assessments.
Judith and her family have been living and working in New Zealand for the past eight years having migrated from the UK. Across her career, she has worked for a range of engineering firms, including large corporates. The move to CKL meets her desire to be part of a dynamic and growing consultancy that has a strong culture with family values.

 Daniel Brown - Planning Manager
Daniel took up his new position of Planning Manager on 5 September, joining the CKL team in Auckland. Daniel, originally from Rotorua, completed his Bachelor of Social Science with a major in Geography at Waikato University and headed overseas. After travelling in the UK and spending a year in Ireland playing Rugby Union and working as a Juniors Coach, Daniel moved to London. He was able to secure work as a Planner with the local council authority in a policy and planning role and from there carved out a career in development planning.
He has worked on some major venue planning projects in the lead up to the London Olympics, including the Lee valley VeloPark (velodrome), Copper Box Arena (handball stadium), and the Olympic Village. A key focus of this role was development control and resource consents.
After working as the Principal Planner and gaining significant experience in project management in the enforcement area, he decided to return to New Zealand.
Daniel moved to Auckland in 2013 to a role with Auckland Council, initially with the Bylaw team, before moving to the Resource Consent team as an Intermediate Planner. He then progressed to Senior Planner and most recently to Team Leader, Central Resource Consenting and Compliance for the last four years.
Daniel is a valuable addition to our leadership team. He has assumed immediate responsibility for the coordination, management, and leadership of the Auckland Planning Team. He is getting to know everyone and the various projects that are underway.

 Andrew Scott - SurveyorCKL is pleased to welcome Andrew Scott back to the Auckland team after the completion of his studies in Dunedin towards a Bachelor of Surveying. Andrew started with CKL back in 2012 as a Field Assistant, with a National Diploma in Surveying under his belt from Unitech. He proved himself as a dedicated and capable team member, keen to get out in the field and get as much experience as possible. He worked with CKL for four years before deciding to pursue further studies and work towards becoming a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor.
Together with his partner, they rented out their house in Auckland and moved South at the start of 2016. Andrew’s Diploma provided him with subject credits, essentially reducing a four year degree to three years. By picking up additional papers each semester, Andrew was able to further reduce the timeframe of his degree, completing his studies in June of this year.
Andrew stayed associated with CKL throughout his studies, returning during semester breaks to gain more experience; taking on a number of small scale surveying projects, with a particular focus on cadastral surveying.
Now back in Auckland full time and gaining additional experience across a range of CKL projects, including the Halls Farm subdivision in Orewa, Andrew is well on track to achieve his Licence.

Congratulations to Sam Jackman

At the recent Centennial Awards Dinner of the Auckland Branch of Engineering New Zealand, our very own Sam Jackman was awarded his Chartership. Sam is our Auckland-based Engineering Manager, who leads a team of 14 civil engineers at different stages in their professional careers. Now recognised as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and a Chartered Member Engineering NZ (CMEngNZ), this registration acknowledges specific technical experience, knowledge and expertise at an international standard, and recognises Sam’s continued contribution to the industry.
As part of the process to become a Chartered Professional Engineer/Chartered Member, Sam completed a comprehensive assessment in his chosen field of engineering – Land Development / Civil Engineering which was peer reviewed.
The assessment reviewed a demonstrated body of work and specifically focussed on Sam’s project management expertise, professional judgment and competance, leadership quality and capability, adherance to the industry code of ethics, and his commitment to continuing professional development.
For our clients, Chartership provides an assurance of strong project management and innovative engineering design and practice that is aligned with international best practice.
This professional achievement is celebrated at CKL. We currently have three other engineers working towards their Chartership and the management team is supporting them in their endeavours.

Bronwyn Rhynd named 2018 Stormwater Professional of the Year
|

CKL Director Bronwyn Rhynd was recognised as Stormwater Professional of the Year at Water New Zealand’s 2018 Stormwater Conference. The award acknowledged and celebrated Bronwyn’s outstanding contribution to the profession and the engineering industry, as well as her expertise in design and construction of innovative, low impact / water sensitive stormwater solutions.
Bronwyn has a long and successful engineering career, establishing Stormwater Solutions - one of New Zealand’s leading environmental engineering consultancies, before merging the business with CKL in 2015 to create a fully integrated engineering consultancy under the CKL brand.
Bronwyn now leads a team of specialist civil and environmental engineers and technical support staff, providing water sensitive design and engineering input to CKL projects across New Zealand.
Many of the land development and engineering projects Bronwyn has led have received local and international acclaim for their sympathetic approach to the natural environment and the efficient management of water resources, whilst achieveing client aspirations and positive environmental outcomes.

Project Update: Manukau Road stream restoration
|
|
In the lead up to the development of the Pukekohe Mega Centre, Auckland Council sought to purchase surrounding land to allow for the development of a suitable floodway to manage 100 year flood events. One landowner did not sell and as a result of the development was left with an ‘island’ of property that was inaccessible, cut off by an existing stream channel on one side and the new floodway on the other. Over the past number of years, negotiations have been undertaken between Council and the property owner to re-establish access to the parcel of land, involving re-routing the stream to the other side of the ‘island’ and filling in the old channel in order to facilitate access.
CKL/Stormwater Solutions as key contributors to the original floodway design, was re-engaged to conduct a baseline ecological survey and establish the characteristics of the existing stream channel, and to design the new stream to reflect the existing channel morphology, but with a focus on enhancing the riparian cover, in-stream structure, and aquatic habitat function.
The existing channel was a modified urban watercourse, dominated by both indigenous and non-indigenous riparian vegetation species. To add complexity to the project, the alignment of the new stream was to be through the 100-year floodway designed as part of the Mega Centre development. The design of the new stream required ingenuity with respect to re-naturalizing a stream channel within an engineered floodway characterised by peat soils, and hard engineered controls such as gabion baskets and reno mattresses, put in place to manage the dynamic hydrological characteristics of the stream and upper catchment area.
The CKL stormwater and environmental engineering team used the baseline parameters of the existing channel to define the basic design and function of the new stream, while incorporating greater structural diversity in the streambed and banks, and re-establishing riparian habitat through the planting of indigenous vegetation species adapted to the periodic flooding, high water table and organic soils.
The design and construction of the new stream incorporated the removal and modification of gabian baskets to shape the channel, the placement of in-stream structures such as Kauri rootwads, and logs sourced from other development sites, boulders, deep pools and small meanders. The banks were planted out with indigenous species, and some 120 native eels, captured during a fish salvage from the old channel, were relocated to the new stream.
The old channel was then filled in to facilitate access to the parcel of land, providing the owner with potential for future development. CKL’s surveying team is currently monitoring the old channel for compaction and settlement and expects to provide clearance for the site to be officially handed over later this year.

CKL to go live with a new-look website
CKL’s website is undergoing a transformation with a new layout, and new stories, imagery and information.
Talking about the website refresh, Bevan Houlbrooke said, “We recognise our website is a valuable marketing asset and communication tool. It is the first port of call for many developers and potential team members and showcases our work as well as our culture. We launched the existing site when we merged with Stormwater Solutions in 2015, and while we have periodically uploaded new content, it is time for a completely new format.We have looked at the needs of our clients, partners and candidates and will be changing the entire user experience. We would love to know what you think of it,” added Bevan.
Set to launch in September, the website will deliver fresh content on a new and easy to navigate platform that will be fully optimized for use on all devices.
