DIRECTORS' UPDATE

2021 has been another significant year at CKL, with many changes and challenges which we have successfully navigated together.

We have continued to grow during 2021, achieving success in recruiting talented new staff to increase our project capacity and meet demand.
This has increased our agility and strengthens our company culture that ensures many of our clients still get to work directly with our senior team, something we pride ourselves on.

A focus for CKL in 2021 has been on continuing to improve our use of technology, with the latest round of COVID-19 lockdowns certainly proving our systems.

CKL has also implemented enhanced software and upgraded the physical instruments we use in our day-to-day work, to create a more seamless user experience for both staff and our clients. Part of this focus has also seen us employ a dedicated IT manager so we stay ahead of the curve in terms of our remote working ability and our systems.

Staff wellbeing has always been a focus and part of our people-centric approach. We recognise the effort our staff have made over the past few months, balancing their home lives and sharing their workspaces with family, while continuing to deliver a high-quality service for our clients.

Along with changes in the way we work, there have been many developments in policy and planning coming from both local and national Government throughout 2021. Alongside our project work, CKL staff have been working hard to ensure we understand these changes and how they might impact our clients. From the Three Waters Reform to the Resource Management Amendment Bill, there are a raft of changes on the table, and we are ready to help our clients successfully navigate them in 2022.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year, and a relaxing holiday with family and friends. We look forward to working with you in 2022.

Ngā mihi,

GEOFF, BEVAN, BRONWYN, MARK AND CAM.

Project: Doncaster Drive

CKL has been involved in a new high-density housing development on Doncaster Drive in Papamoa for New Zealand-wide development firm, and long-standing client, Gemscott.

The 40-lot residential subdivision is on one of the last remaining large landholdings in Papamoa; a 1.2 hectare site on Doncaster Drive. Its location is particularly desirable, set immediately adjacent to Papamoa College with public transport directly outside and lots of open space nearby. The project is well underway with the planning and consent processes both completed, and earthworks in progress.

Of note, the density of this development is new for Papamoa. Many of the houses, particularly road frontage, are two or three stories with sections around 150m2; a denser style traditionally reflective of bigger city subdivisions. The CKL planning team’s work ensured Tauranga City Council was ultimately satisfied that any adverse affects would be minor and non-notified resource consent was approved for the development.

CKL provided input into this project across planning, surveying and environmental engineering. Most recently, the Tauranga team have undertaken work on boundary pegging and as-built surveying. CKL’s environmental engineering team provided expertise due to the nature of the land which, interestingly, used to be the highest point in Papamoa prior to development.

CKL: Our team make-up

As CKL grows, we wanted to share and celebrate the diversity across our offices. Below are the flags representing those in our team, plus how we are spread geographically and our gender breakdown.

Project: Ngāruawāhia development

CKL is excited to be involved in the newest residential development on the Waikato River at Ngāruawāhia, River’s Edge, being built by Next Construction. The comprehensive residential development will be one of Ngāruawāhia’s first higher density developments, with lots ranging from 156sq metres through to 474sq metres.

CKL managed the project through consenting with both the Waikato District Council and Waikato Regional Council, preparing the environmental and civil engineering plans. CKL is now engaged to manage construction and provide all surveying for the development to take it through to completion.

CKL’s engineering team prepared all the engineering plans for the earthworks, which are now underway, in addition to the roading and three waters requirements.

Pre-construction works also included consultation with local iwi, archaeological investigations, and the development of a stormwater system.

Our innovative environmental engineering team’s design of the stormwater system has incorporated raingardens to treat stormwater from the development, before discharging into the Waikato River through a new outfall structure. This ensures the river’s water quality is maintained.

CKL Tauranga hits 2 year anniversary

Our Tauranga office recently celebrated its second anniversary, marking a period of steady growth for the office since it opened the doors in November 2019.

Starting out with two senior consultants, Alan Wilkinson as Tauranga Branch Manager and Mark Batchelor as the Tauranga Planning Manager, today our Bay of Plenty team has grown to be nine-strong.

The office was set up in the Tauranga CBD at 1/73 Spring Street, where we remain today.

Alan Wilkinson is pleased with how the office has not just operated, but grown during the uncertain times over the last two years. Read more >

Project: CORT Community Housing

CKL are proud to work with CORT Community Housing (Community of Refuge Trust) on this residential housing project in Henderson. CORT is a registered community and affordable housing organisation providing homes for people on very low incomes in Auckland, and has been offering community housing for more than 30 years.

Resource consent has been obtained non-notified for 12 one-bedroom apartment units across two buildings in the THAB zone on Pomaria Road, with CKL providing the full gambit of planning, surveying, civil engineering, environmental engineering and transportation services. Miles Construction Ltd are due to commence construction in the near future, with site-clearing works currently underway.

CKL team successes

Four surveyors attain LCS

Congratulations to Katie Anson, Andrew Scott, Ben Dennison and Brandon Taylor for reaching this career milestone. It is a true mark of professional competence, experience and technical skill.

Whilst 'getting licensed' is on the list for many surveyors, it doesn't come without perseverance, long hours and hard work - and even tougher when you have to negotiate the Covid-19 restrictions.   View article >

Two CKL engineers achieve CPEng

CKL has had two experienced civil engineers gain their CPEng in 2021, Adeel Hassan and Charlotte Meyer.

To reach this significant milestone, candidates assemble a detailed portfolio and partake in interviews where they are assessed on their technical knowledge, integrity and ethics. This rigorous process gives those who achieve their Chartership an element of status and prestige within the engineering profession.

Both Adeel and Charlotte focus on land development, and look forward to taking on project management tasks and the increased responsibility that comes with Chartership.

Project: Kerikeri with Gemscott

Recently we announced the approval of another resource consent for Gemscott, 307 Kerikeri Road, Kerikeri.

307 Kerikeri Road consists of 10 two-storey duplex units, making this development the first two-storey dwellings to be approved for consent in the surrounding environment.

This approval aligns with the National Policy Statement on Urban Development by achieving a higher level of intensification near town centres, and highlights a focus on walkability and sustainability in the area.

CKL provided input for all fields of the consenting process including planning, surveying, civil and environmental engineering, and transportation services. View article >

Team wellbeing in 2021

Amidst the uncertainty of this year, supporting staff wellbeing has been at the forefront of our Directors’ minds. With the onset of lockdown, the team organised a series of inspirational webinars, and our team have taken part in a variety of challenges, from gardening, to the culinary arts and counting their steps.

Project: T11 Growth Cell Te Awamutu

The T11 growth cell is a 30 hectare block of land on Te Awamutu’s eastern boundary that is earmarked for 400+ residential sections. CKL has been involved with the development from the very early stages. Our surveyors were the first to be on the ground and provided a detailed topographic survey which was subsequently used by our civil, stormwater and transportation engineers to design the landform, stormwater management systems, roading network and reticulation.

Our resource management planners have also been involved from very early on providing advice regarding Plan change 13 and more recently submitting subdivision and land consent applications. Construction is expected to start in 2022.

A well-earned break for all, bring on the sun and relaxation!

As the working year draws to a close, CKL would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. Meri Kirihimete!

Our offices will be closed from 12 noon on Thursday 23 December 2021, and reopen Monday 17 January 2022. Should you have an urgent requirement over the break, please call 027 289 1771.
