Maungatautari Ecological Island

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, located in the Waikato is the largest ecological island on mainland New Zealand. Surrounded by 47kms of predator proof fence, many of New Zealand’s most endangered species of birds, fish, insects and plants are able to thrive in 3,400 hectares, free of pests. With the eradication of mammalian predators largely complete, native bird populations are being re-introduced.

Waipa District Council became aware that the pest proof fence encircling the Maungatautari Ecological Island was encroaching on private property of adjoining land owners.

Council needed to determine, for their own records and that of the landowners, the length of the fence and the area of each property that had been fenced off as part of the ecological reserve. This information then dictated the allocation of Transferrable Development Right (TDR) titles that would be allocated to the landowners in exchange for the land that sat within the designated reserve.

CKL was engaged to conduct a field survey of the boundary fence. Our surveyors liaised with landowners for permission to enter their working farms, adhered to health and safety measures, and identifyed possible hazards for each site. Using GPS technology and a quad bike, trained operators were able to carry out the field survey and complete calculations well within project timeframes.

CKL provided Waipa District Council a full set of coloured plans, from which Council was able to incorporate TDR entitlements for the impacted Maungatautari Landowners into the recently published Proposed District Plan.
